Giving students time to reflect on their own work helps them to think about what they have learned and asses their own effort and success. Reflections, Self-evaluations, and Scholarly Pathways are examples of student-led assessment. These tools foster critical thinking. I love to see how students evaluate and assess their own learning. They tell me whether or not they truly understand a concept and they give me insight into what they knew! I love the idea that students have more than just me as the evaluator! They have themselves! This ability to self-assess moves them in the direction of being able to regulate their own learning. Isn't that what our jobs as teachers is supposed to be? Not shoveling in the information, but providing students with tools to help them succeed in the 21st century???
At our site, we follow the traits of a scholar from Dr. Sandra Kaplan. These traits are guideposts for our students on their journey into becoming 21st century citizens. Below is an example of an evaluation sheet I made that utilized these traits, helping students think about how they view themselves as learners, focusing in on what is important to them.
